Weathershield Opaque AP provides a colourful choice

As part of the six year external cyclical decoration programme, Yorkshire Housing identified a development in the Lupset area of Wakefield. It was found that the existing woodstain previously applied across the site was in a poor condition, and remedial work was required before a new finish could be applied.

Yorkshire Housing called upon the woodcare experts at Dulux Trade and Dulux Trade Contract Partner, Leevers Decorators, to recommend a suitable product.

Glen Cranfield, Maintenance Surveyor for Yorkshire Housing, explained: "We found the finish of the previous woodstain had degraded much more quickly than anticipated, which could be due to serious weathering, or because the surface had not been adequately prepared before the previous application of woodstain."

Dulux Trade Weathershield Ultimate Opaque was selected in Deep Maple for the more exposed features, including the windows and fascias. For the soffits and undercover areas such as car ports, a semi-translucent version was applied.

Glen added: "We wanted the timber to be uniform in appearance and had originally hoped to use a woodstain in order to maximise its natural look. However, the condition of some of the wood meant we needed a block colour that would cover imperfections without having to use paint. The opaque woodstain provided the perfect balance between solid colour and enhancing the natural aesthetic of the timber."

A high performance solvent-based exterior coating, Dulux Trade Weathershield Ultimate Opaque produces a water repellent satin finish that will protect exterior joinery for up to 10 years. By using this product, Leevers Decorators was able to ensure that the timber at Snapethorpe will remain fresh-looking for the duration of Yorkshire Housing's six-year maintenance cycle. Dulux Trade Weathershield Ultimate Opaque can be applied on both hardwoods and softwoods and is available in 600 colours.

Glen concluded: "The product has transformed the development. People who live in the development are very pleased with the results and it has helped to increase their sense of pride for their homes."
