How to minimise moisture problems by design

Proper dampcourses must be present and detailing must be adequate. For example roofs should overhang to protect walls and windows, rainwater goods should be of good quality and properly installed, there should be sufficient distance between the damp-proof course and the surface of the ground (say at least six inches) to avoid rain splashing up above the damp-proof course. Construction above window and door openings should ensure that water is shed rather than directed into any external cavities.
