Condition of surface table

Before specifying a paint system, you will need to find out what condition the existing surface is in. This table helps with this classification.

Code Name Description
A New New surface requiring cleaning and minimal preparation to receive surface coating application.
B Uncoated Existing uncoated surface having had some degree of exposure to natural conditions but requiring minimal preparation.
C Factory Coated/Primed New or existing surface with factory applied coating or factory applied primer, requiring some cleaning and preparation.
D No Breakdown Coated surface in excellent condition showing no coating failure, minimal cleaning and preparation required.
E Light Failure
(< 20%)
Coatings showing some breakdown (< 20%) not only in high wear areas, surfaces will require wash-down, scraping back of failed coatings and some minor surface repairs.
F Partial Removal (20-50% Failure) Medium breakdown of existing coatings (20-50%), failed coatings and high wear areas should be stripped and repairs undertaken.
G Heavy Failure/ Incompatible Coatings All coatings should be completely removed prior to repairs taking place.
H Wall Coverings (good) Minor breakdown of existing wall coverings. Surfaces should be cleaned down and minor repairs undertaken, existing paper should be stuck down.
J Wall Coverings (poor) Major breakdown of existing wall coverings. Completely remove existing coverings using a suitable method, repair surfaces as necessary.
