Vivid and intense colours from Dulux Trade are playing a key role in revitalising a community arts and leisure complex in Grays, Essex.
The Thameside Theatre is a multi-functional combination of library, theatre, museum and arts resource, but the building had become a drab and confusing place to be. Architects and design consultants Bisset Adams, have created a coherent and accessible activity-based interior design using colour as a framework.
Each area of the building is identified using a particular colour: blue is for learning, green for heritage, orange for entertainment and pink for the arts. All facilities are clearly identified with a strong burgundy.
The effect is instantly uplifting, giving an energetic and positive atmosphere to the complex. More importantly, the clear identification of different areas allows visitors to navigate their way around and to be constantly aware, at an almost subconscious level, of where they are in the building.
In designing this colour theme, Graham Brown of Bisset Adams was also keenly aware of the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) so each coloured zone uses hues of the main colour to provide the contrast levels required by the DDA.
Visit Thameside Theatre now at any time and the effect of the transformation is clear. It has become a welcoming and attractive facility for the local population.
