Dulux Trade’s old school revival

Classroom blocks at Saint Benedict Catholic School in Derby now have a new lease of life guaranteed to last, thanks to Dulux Trade and a decorator team from Nottinghamshire-based Riley and Co.

Like many schools built in the 1960s and 70s, Saint Benedict features a large number of timber-clad buildings, many with the woodwork in an extremely poor condition. Dulux Trade Contract Partner, Riley and Co, was appointed to repair and repaint the buildings, totaling around 2000 m2, and was asked to provide a 5-year guarantee on the completed work.

After consultation with Dulux Trade’s technical department, a specification was provided for Dulux Trade Weathershield Aquatech Opaque in a choice of complementary light and dark violet/blue shades, from the Weathershield Colour Range, to paint the cladding and details such as handrails, balustrades, fascias and soffits.

Additionally, the Window Care Repair System was employed to restore the cracked and damaged timber windows. These were then repainted using the Dulux Trade Weathershield Exterior Gloss System. Using the two systems eliminated the need for costly window replacement, reducing the inconvenience to the school, and providing long term protection.

Says Des Riley, Managing Director, Riley and Co: “More than 20 of our craftsmen contributed their individual skills to this demanding project. Their expertise, along with the assistance of our colleagues at Dulux Trade and Windowcare, allowed us to complete the works to a tight schedule and provide the long-term guarantee demanded by the school.”

Christopher Reynolds, Headteacher of Saint Benedict School says: “The school’s brief was met in a cost- and time-effective way and I felt in control throughout.”
