London music venue Madame Jo Jo’s re-opened its doors in September, showing off a stylish new look. As part of a two-year complete redecoration project, Polycell Trade Ready Mixed Adhesive was specified to ensure the nightclub’s glamorous image sticks.
Situated in the heart of Soho, Madame Jo Jo’s has over the years gained a reputation as a cultural landmark, and due to its retro look, and as a popular haunt for celebrities. The nightclub’s décor is a throwback to a bygone era of 50’s London glamour, with crimson velvet banquette seating and Art-Deco balustrades.
Bespoke, hand printed wallpaper was specified for both the interior and exterior entrance, from the late Australian designer, Florence Broadhurst’s last collection. The intricate metallic, laminated Mylar butterfly and exotic bird design and the weight of the paper stock meant that a strong, workable adhesive was required.
Madame Jo Jo’s consulted ICI Paints, and Polycell Trade Ready Mixed Adhesive was recommended. The formula was ideal for the works as the product’s excellent slip properties enable the luxury wall-coverings to be repositioned with ease until a perfect match is achieved. Additionally, the formula’s low water content helps prevent wallpaper shrinkage – which as a result improves the overall finish.
Time was a key consideration for the redecoration project, especially as the venue remained open for most evenings. ICI Paints was approached by Madame Jo Jo’s to offer advice on how preparation and hanging time could be significantly reduced without compromising on quality.
“We had several meetings with ICI Paints to discuss the project and our requirements. Samples of the wallpaper were tested in ICI Paints’ laboratory against a variety of adhesives, establishing the perfect product for our individual needs” said Paris Tkaczyk, owner of Madame Jo Jo’s.
Dulux Trade Clearcoat was additionally specified to protect the wallpaper, reducing yellowing and any potential damage caused.
